Family-friendly garden restaurant in Doncaster

"Walkers Nurseries & Garden Centre" in Doncaster, England, is much more than just a typical garden center – it is a family-run business with a rich history that has been in operation since its founding in 1951 by Lawrence and Vera Walker. What started as a small stall selling home-grown produce has evolved over the decades into a popular destination for gardening enthusiasts, families, and food lovers. In addition to an extensive range of plants and gardening supplies, it also houses a renowned restaurant known as the "Garden Restaurant," famous for its homemade dishes and relaxed atmosphere. The establishment is located near Blaxton, just outside of Doncaster, and benefits from its accessible location on key transport links, making it an ideal stop for day-trippers.

Homemade dishes at garden restaurant

The atmosphere in the "Garden Restaurant" is bright and inviting, characterized by a modern design that still maintains a cozy touch. The spacious interior accommodates up to 200 guests and features large windows that let in plenty of natural light and provide views of the surrounding gardens. Notably, the covered outdoor terrace is a popular option for guests wishing to dine al fresco when the weather is nice – perfect for keeping an eye on children in the adjacent play area. The decor is functional and family-friendly, with amenities such as wheelchair access and changing facilities that cater to the needs of various guests. The restaurant is often busy, especially on weekends, and the staff is appreciated for their friendliness and helpfulness, even though there can occasionally be minor delays during peak times.

Garden and restaurant combination in Yorkshire

Culinary-wise, the "Garden Restaurant" emphasizes homemade, hearty dishes that focus on fresh ingredients – many sourced from local suppliers in Yorkshire. A highlight is the "Homemade Steak and Potato Pie," a robust pie filled with tender meat and rich gravy, served in a crispy crust and praised for its intense flavor. Equally popular is the "Gardener’s Full English," a traditional breakfast featuring sausages, bacon, and eggs that kick-starts the day with energy, often enjoyed alongside a cup of Rington’s coffee. For a lighter option, the "Quiche of the Day" offers a fresh alternative, prepared with seasonal ingredients such as spinach or cheese. For dessert, the "Brownie" beckons, a moist chocolate treat served warm, renowned for its rich texture. All dishes are prepared fresh daily, ensuring consistent quality for guests.

Excellent plants and gardening supplies

The beverage selection is diverse, featuring a range of coffees and teas that are especially popular at breakfast, as well as an assortment of soft drinks and local beers that complement the meals. The restaurant collaborates with carefully selected suppliers, including KD Davis and Sons for fresh fruits and vegetables and Armstrong Butchers for high-quality meats, highlighting its connection to the region. In addition to the restaurant, there is also a "Food to Go" area that provides quick options for those on the run, as well as the "Glasshouse," another spot for coffee or a snack in a relaxed environment.

Just taken my mum for her first walkers experience, Amazing, ordered a wheelchair and it was waiting for us when we arrived. Had a small lunch in the restaurant, brilliant. The staff were great, couldn't do enough for us. 5*

Great place for something to eat and to purchase items for the garden or home. Lots of varieties of plants and flowers to choose from. Lovely cakes available to purchase and lots of choices in the restaurant.

Called in for lunch at 2:30 pm - just starting to clear away hot food options - the meal was poor, the plate that was handed to me had baked bean juice along the underside of the outside rim which I had to wipe away, the chips were dry and tasteless and the price was extortionate I have in all seriousness had better tasting food in a transport cafe. My advice would be to avoid this place and find somewhere better, certainly when you compare prices

I have visited walkers 4 times in the last 2 months to meet with friends for lunch. I can't resist the homemade quiche and fresh cream desserts. I enjoy browsing the gift shop and plant nursery and I have purchased a few items, but I do feel the prices are higher than other garden centres I visit regularly. The landscaped gardens are beautiful and peaceful, almost hidden away and probably not that well known to visitors.

This is a great nursery. Very large with a great deal of plants, garden furniture, gardening tools and other things to look at. The prices are excellent and far cheaper than the likes of Dobbies. We also had coffee in the cafe and this was competitively priced and delicious. If you’ve got young kids there are also a couple of llama in the field next door and a play area.

Had some lovely soup in the restaurant! Lovely decoration and setting! The only thing I did find was that it's little confusing, no obvious menu for what is available and prices. ...

Quite disappointing, very little food and the toasties can with hair prize. Odd reaction from staff: "sorry about that, I will make a note of it" I had to ask to be called back about the outcome of their investigation - although it appeared this kinda of situation was kinda expected?! Anyway, I am expecting a call hopefully soon. Will update this when I do. They provided a refund on the toastie. There were staff without hair nets, some with loose hair. Will do my best to avoid this in the future. Update 20/01/25: I have spoken with a representative yesterday and they have shared the corrective actions being deployed to make sure this doesn't happen again. They were sympathetic and sounded a little bit embarrassed that this had happened. I have improved the score to 2 stars from the previous 1 star.
